NSW: Collins and Chikarovski united at protest

New South Wales opposition leader KERRY CHIKAROVSKI and the man she deposed, PETER
COLLINS, have presented a united front for the first time since he lost the top job.

The two appeared together at a rally in Sydney's north to prevent the opening of a
controversial sewerage vent near a school.

Both addressed the assembled crowd but the time they shared the same space was brief.

After making some polite chitchat with Mrs CHIKAROVSKI before the rally got under way,
Mr COLLINS was quick to slip away afterwards, leaving her to front the media.

Mrs CHIKAROVSKI tried to play down the significance of the dual appearance, saying
the pair often attend state council meetings and other party functions together but admitted
they aren't public forums.

Mr COLLINS was ousted from the Liberal Party leadership when Mrs CHIKAROVSKI staged
a party room coup in December 1998.

The party went on to its greatest defeat ever in the March 1999 state election.

Mr COLLINS has publicly denounced the appalling election result in the past but it
appears he's comfortable enough to enlist Mrs CHIKAROVSKI for some publicity.
