End of an era at Swinemoor.

TWO Beverley schools which are due to merge are inviting past pupils to a celebration to mark the end of an era, and hoping some will sing at the event.

Swinemoor Infant and Junior schools will close in July, reopening as a combined primary school in the autumn term.

The schools opened in 1967 and the celebration is planned to mark 40 years of education on the site.

Staff are inviting former pupils and friends of the two schools to a family picnic on Thursday July 19, from 5 to 7pm, on the Junior School playing field.

And they are hoping to get together a choir made up of former pupils, to sing at the event.

Swinemoor Junior School teacher Jane Sharp said entertainment at the event would be mainly provided by the schools' staff and pupils, together with the choir.

Pupils of Spencer School, which was succeeded by the Swinemoor Schools, will also be welcome to attend.

Two short rehearsals will be held for the choir, on Friday July 6 and Thursday July 12, both from 4.30 to 5pm. It is hoped that past pupils interested in singing at the event will attend at least one of the practice sessions.

Anyone interested in being part of the choir can ring Swinemoor Junior School on tel (01482) 869247. People planning to attend the family picnic should also contact the school for free tickets.

The two schools, which are in separate buildings on the Burden Road site, are merging because of falling pupil numbers. The governing bodies of both schools have supported the amalgamation, which education chiefs say will provide increased educational benefits through improvements in continuity and in the provision of teaching.
