Act: Triple fatality a warning against road complacency police
ACT police have issued a warning to motorists not to be complacent following the death
of three men in a car crash on one of Canberra's model roads.
The three died when a Commodore sedan skidded off Drakeford Drive in the suburb of
Bonython yesterday afternoon and burst into flames when it hit an underpass wall.
Two men were burnt beyond recognition in the wreck of the ACT-registered car and another
occupant, who was thrown clear, died a short time later in Canberra hospital.
The men have still not been formally identified.
Acting Superintendent PHIL NEWTON says motorists should just heed commonsense rules
like don't drink and drive, don't speed, and travel according to the road conditions at
the time.
He also says traffic figures from the holiday period show some motorists are being
complacent about speed.
Among speedsters detected, one was driving at 124kph in an 80kph zone in rain on Canberra's
busy Hindmarsh Drive.
There have also been four positive breath tests and police have issued 75 traffic infringement
notices.
