     Ford raises Edge sales forecast
DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. last week raised its 2007 sales forecast for the Edge crossover to 120,000 units, from 100,000.
Edge sales totaled 12,701 in May, the highest monthly total since it was launched late last year, said George Pipas, Ford sales analysis reporting manager. The sales forecast could mean a boost in production. Ford plans to add 77,000 units of light-truck production in the third quarter. Ford declined to discuss how the Edge fits into that plan.
The 3,490 May sales of the Lincoln MKX, an upscale version of the Edge, also set a monthly record. The vehicles are assembled at Ford's Oakville, Ontario, plant.

Chrysler plans Mexico engine plant
MEXICO CITY - The Chrysler group on Friday announced plans to spend $570 million on a new plant in Saltillo in northern Mexico. The plant will make V-6 engines for a vehicle program to be unveiled this month.
Frank Ewasyshyn, Chrysler's executive vice president for manufacturing, said the engine would be developed jointly with Mercedes-Benz and be part of the Phoenix family of fuel-efficient V-6 engines.

Chrysler said the project is part of a $3 billion powertrain investment program that will support 20 new-vehicle launches over the next three years. Chrysler has forged ahead with the program despite the pending $7.4 billion acquisition of the automaker by Cerberus Capital Management LP.
Construction starts this month, and the plant is to open in 2009. It will employ 485 and have the capacity to make 440,000 engines annually.
